The Oberon 3 is good, has a big and bold sound.

If you’ve seen the other speakers in the range, much here will be familiar. The Dali Oberon 3 speakers have a CNC machined MDF board cabinet, available in a range of four vinyl finishes - light oak, walnut, white and black ash.

The same 29mm soft dome tweeter appears across the range, it’s a lightweight design, less than half the weight of most rivals. Dali says it has worked hard to improve the way the tweeter works at the lower frequency end of its range, aiming to deliver a smooth handover between the midrange woofer and tweeter.

A larger 18cm mid/bass driver sets the Oberon 3 apart from its bookshelf sibling, its slightly larger than usual size should deliver more volume and better dynamics. Dali is aiming to deliver wide dispersion with good off-axis performance (they’re similarly designed to be positioned straight-on rather than toed-in).

The Oberon 3 sports a big bass reflex port, so they need a little room to breathe - you wouldn’t want these speakers in too small a room or too close to a wall.

Based on the performance of their siblings, we have high hopes for these speakers and they deliver an impressive scale and weight.

At 35cm tall, these cabinets are bigger than average, meaning you get a sound capable of deep bass with impressive weight and depth for a bookshelf speaker. Similarly, they won’t be found lacking when it comes to filling a room. They are happy at loud volume and deliver an expansive sound.

This big, beefy sound doesn’t mean the Oberon 3 is incapable of subtlety. It not only brings home the scale and width of the soundstage, especially with the speakers aimed straight, but also highlights good stereo imaging, showing skill at placing instruments in the room.

There’s lots to like about the Dali Oberon 3 speakers, not least that they are easy to enjoy. If you want a room-filling sound with deep bass and good detail, you should give these a listen.

The DALI OBERON 3 delivers the large sound of a floorstanding speaker in a compact stand-mount cabinet. The OBERON 3 also makes a great sounding shelf mounted speaker.

EASY INTEGRATION

Well-integrated sound, even off axis

The OBERON 3 is at home in any room. The driver materials and geometry used are purpose-designed to achieve a wide dispersion pattern. The same principles have been applied in the design of the crossover to deliver a well-integrated sound, even when listening at a significant off-axis angle. An added benefit of a wide dispersion pattern is that harmonic distortion and diffractions causing frequency distortion are significantly reduced - this is also the reason why DALI speakers are not designed to be toed in.

NEW WOOD FIBRE CONE

Optimised with a new wood fibre structure

The OBERON 3 features the same 7" low loss woofer used in the OBERON 7. It's been optimised with a new wood fibre structured cone dedicated to reproducing the delicate midrange and bass frequency area. Constructed from a blend of fine-grain paper pulp reinforced with wood fibres, the woofer creates a stiff, yet lightweight structure. And when combined with the low loss surround and spider suspension, the OBERON 3 woofer reproduces the most minute details in the signal, unfiltered and with high accuracy.

REDUCING DISTORTION

DALI's patented SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound)

The use of SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) in the OBERON 3 greatly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents. The result is a magnet motor system with a drastic reduction in third-order distortion, which allows the OBERON 3 to deliver extended listening pleasure, a relaxed midrange and a surprising amount of detailing in its class.

DALI's patented Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC) is used in the pole piece of the woofer magnet motor system, which all the latest DALI loudspeakers benefit from. The result is an extremely agile, well-behaving, ultra low-loss woofer with a significant reduction of distortion from mechanical loss.

The purpose of SMC is to reduce sound coloration to a level where the music comes alive inside your living room - as if the artist was present. The ultimate goal is to make the sound reproduction so free of distortion that you are not able to tell the difference between a live or recorded performance.

The iron pole piece of the woofer magnet is crowned by an SMC disk - minimizing the negative effects of the iron.

OVERSIZED SOFT DOME

Combining well-proven technologies with new features

The oversized 29 mm ultra-lightweight soft dome tweeter was specifically developed for the OBERON series, combining well-proven technologies from their existing DALI ranges with new features. The large size of the membrane lets the tweeter generate higher sound pressure with less excursion, keeping the voice-coil motion to a controlled minimum. The tweeter front plate near the dome has been designed with similar geometry to the OPTICON and RUBICON tweeters to create the optimal working conditions for the soft dome. This results in extended frequency response, wide dispersion and low colouration.

OPTIMISED CABINET

Cabinet design isn't just about good looks

The OBERON 3 cabinet is constructed from a high density, CNC machined MDF board dressed in high-grade vinyl. The extremely rigid structure is achieved with solid bracings across the inside of the cabinet, which practically eliminates cabinet resonance. The bass ports at the rear of the cabinet optimise room integration by using a rear wall surface to improve bass performance. The OBERON series also introduces a new rounded front grille design for a lighter and more contemporary look.
